Every January, the American Red Cross celebrates National Blood
Donor Month, which recognizes the lifesaving contribution of blood
and platelet donors. Every year, blood donation centers collect
15.7 million donations from about 9 million people. However,
although it is estimated that approximately 38 percent of the U.S.
population is eligible to donate blood, less than 10 percent of
those eligible actually donate each year.
