Every January, the American Red Cross celebrates National Blood Donor Month, which recognizes the lifesaving contribution of blood and platelet donors. Every year, blood donation centers collect 15.7 million donations from about 9 million people. However, although it is estimated that approximately 38 percent of the U.S. population is eligible to donate blood, less than 10 percent of those eligible actually donate each year.

Blood donation appointments can be made by downloading the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting redcrossblood.org, or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) to make an appointment or to receive more information.

All blood types are needed, and even donating every once in a while makes a huge difference for the blood needs in this country. To learn more about donating blood, check out our infographic below.
