National Yoga Awareness Month: More Than Just Positive Vibes

Recruitment Specialist

Usually when you hear about an "awareness month," it has to do with an unfortunate subject. Under-researched diseases, natural disasters, and global issues from oppressive governments to a lack of health care and life-sustaining resources monopolize the list. Although these are all causes very deserving of their own month, there are also a few lesser players who make up the awareness scene that don't necessarily have a ribbon but derive from a more positive place. Next month, for example, is National Yoga Awareness Month, which the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has deemed important enough to make it onto the list of National Health Observances (and not those random daily holidays like "Chocolate Milkshake Day," which I am convinced are just part of an elaborate ploy to annoy me on Instagram).

As someone who very recently took up the practice (I've taken about three classes, so I obviously am now an expert on all things "yoga"), I was interested to see exactly what this "awareness month" was about. I mean, we all know what yoga is, right? Well, there are actually surprising health benefits derived from the practice (other than from the well-publicized stress reduction) that can benefit people with an array of health concerns. To give you an idea:

If you want to try out a yoga class, the Yoga Health Foundation is offering a free week for any new students during National Yoga Awareness Month here: http://www.yogahealthfoundation.org/one_week_free_yoga

Or you can stick with your chocolate milkshake. Please just don't post it on Instagram.

Namaste.
