World Arthritis Day: Raising Awareness and Sharing Facts about Rheumatic and Musculoskeletal Diseases

Managing Editor

Today is World Arthritis Day. The day is a global initiative, bringing people together to raise awareness of issues affecting people with rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases (RMDs).

World Arthritis Day also aims to ensure all people with RMDs and their caregivers are aware of the vast support network and help that is available to them.

Our colleagues at the Ketchum office in London are seeking to raise awareness about RMDs. Below is a myth buster quiz that team complied. Some of the statements are true and some are false. Please take the time to read this through and have a think about the answers.

1.)    RMDs affect a quarter of all people in the European Union (T/F)

Answer = TRUE

2.)    Almost every family in Europe is affected by RMDs in some way (T/F)

Answer = TRUE

3.)    There are approximately 50 different types of rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases (T/F)

Answer = FALSE. Rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases (RMDs) encompass over200 different diseasesand are characterised by pain and stiffness in one or more areas of the musculoskeletal system, causing a consequent reduction in the range of motion and function. Examples include rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis, lupus, ankylosing spondylitis and many others.

4.)    In the industrialised world, RMDs affect more individuals than any other disease group (T/F)

Answer = TRUE

5.)    RMDs only affect older people (T/F)

Answer = FALSE. RMDs affect both men and women ofall ages,including children and babies.

6.)    RMDs are only ever hereditary (T/F)

Answer = FALSE. In some cases, RMDs can be hereditary; however a family history of RMDs does not mean you will inevitably get an RMD. RMDs can also be triggered by lifestyle factors such as smoking, excessive weight, sedentary lifestyles, increasing age, and having occupations that lead to injury and overuse of joints/muscles. In some cases the causes are unknown.

7.)    RMDs are the biggest cause of sick leave and premature retirement worldwide (T/F)

Answer = TRUE

8.)    There is nothing I personally can do to help raise awareness (T/F)

Answer = FALSE. TODAY IS WORLD ARTHRITIS DAY, help raise awareness and show your support for people affect by an RMD by sharing a virtual High 5. Don't forget the hashtag #WADHigh5.
